Practical HVAC wisdom from Donald β 25+ years keeping Cleburne & Tarrant County comfortable
Hey folks β Donald here. Summer is bearing down on us fast, and this week I want to talk about something I see go sideways every single year once the heat kicks in: refrigerant leaks. Most homeowners don't think much about refrigerant until the AC is blowing warm air and it's 102 degrees outside. By that point, we've usually got a bigger problem than we started with. Let me explain what's actually happening inside your system and what to watch for before it becomes an emergency.
Here's the first thing you need to understand: your HVAC system is a sealed loop. Refrigerant doesn't get "used up" like gas in your car. If the refrigerant level is low, that means one thing β it leaked out somewhere. There's no other explanation.
I bring this up because I still get calls from homeowners who've had another company come out and "top off" their refrigerant without ever finding or fixing the leak. That's like bailing water out of a boat with a hole in it. You're paying money, the problem's still there, and the clock is ticking on your compressor.
When refrigerant is low, your system starts working harder to do the same job. You'll feel it as weak airflow, rooms that won't cool down, or humidity creeping up inside the house even though the AC is running. What you won't feel β at least not right away β is the damage happening to your compressor. That component is the heart of your system, and it's not designed to run without the right refrigerant charge. Keep running it that way long enough, and a leak that might have cost a few hundred dollars to repair turns into a compressor replacement or a full system change-out.
In Johnson and Tarrant counties, we run our systems hard. Burleson, Cleburne, Crowley, Benbrook β these neighborhoods can see the AC run nearly nonstop from late May through September. A small leak that might be a nuisance somewhere up north can spiral into a serious breakdown here in a matter of weeks.
The refrigerant world is changing right now. Newer systems are moving away from R-410A toward refrigerants like R-32 and R-454B. Some of these newer refrigerants have a mild flammability rating, which means proper handling and certified technicians matter more than ever. If someone's working on your system, make sure they're trained and licensed for the equipment they're touching. At PSC, we stay current on all of it β that's not optional in my book.
Walk around both your indoor and outdoor units and look for any of these early warning signs:
Catch one of these early and you're probably looking at a straightforward repair. Wait until the system quits on a Friday afternoon in July, and your options get a lot more expensive and a lot more uncomfortable.
If anything on that list sounds familiar, give us a call at (817) 393-1700. We'll find the leak, fix it right, and get you squared away before the real heat arrives.
