North Texas doesn't ease into summer — it kicks the door in. Once we're staring down week after week of 95°F-plus days, your AC runs hard and it runs long. That's not the time to discover a clogged filter or a blocked condenser. Here's what to check right now, before the heat really digs in.

Start With Your Filter

This is the one I harp on constantly, and I'll keep harping on it because it matters that much. A dirty filter chokes off airflow, and reduced airflow can cut your system's efficiency by up to 15%. In summer, that means longer runtimes, higher electric bills, and a compressor working harder than it should. During peak cooling season, check your filter every month — and if you've got pets or a dusty house, don't wait that long. When in doubt, change it out. Filters are cheap. Repairs aren't.

Look at Your Outdoor Unit

Walk outside and take a good look at your condenser. Is there at least two feet of clearance all the way around it? After mowing season kicks in, grass clippings pack against those fins fast. Cottonwood fluff is another big one around here — that stuff coats a condenser like a blanket. Storm debris adds up too. Make it a habit to glance at that unit after you mow or after any significant wind or rain. A blocked condenser can't shed heat properly, and that's how you end up with a system that runs constantly but never quite cools the house down.

Check Your Condensate Drain

Your AC pulls a lot of moisture out of the air in summer, and all that water has to go somewhere. It drains out through a condensate line — and if that line gets clogged with algae or debris, the water backs up. Best case, your system shuts itself off. Worst case, you've got water dripping into your ceiling or walls before you even notice. Take a look at the drain pan under your air handler. If there's standing water in it, that drain needs attention now.

Run a Quick Cool-Down Test

Set your thermostat a few degrees lower than the current indoor temperature and let the system run for 15 minutes. You're listening for anything unusual — rattling, grinding, weak airflow from the vents — and checking whether the house actually starts cooling down at a reasonable pace. This simple test can surface a struggling system before it fails completely.

One More Thing Worth Knowing

If you've got a lot of west- or south-facing windows, the afternoon sun pouring through them can account for nearly 30% of your home's total cooling load. Blinds, shades, or solar film on those windows can take a real bite out of how hard your AC has to work on those long, blazing afternoons.

And please — don't wait until the first major heat wave hits to find out if your system is ready. That's when everybody else is calling too, small problems become emergencies, and getting someone out quickly gets harder. A little prevention now goes a long way.
