North Texas winters have a personality of their own. We'll cruise through November in short sleeves and then get slapped with a hard freeze overnight in December. That kind of weather whiplash is exactly why early fall preparation matters so much here in Johnson and Tarrant counties. By the time you actually need the heat, it's too late to discover a problem without paying emergency rates — or worse, going without heat while you wait for a technician.

The good news is that furnace prep doesn't have to be complicated. Here's what I tell every one of my customers.

Run a Test Before the Cold Hits

This is the single most valuable thing you can do. Right now, while the weather is still warm, go to your thermostat, switch it to Heat, and bump the temperature about five degrees above whatever the room is sitting at. Then wait. Within 10 to 15 minutes you should feel warm air coming from your vents. While you're waiting, use your ears and your nose. Any banging, rattling, or grinding is a red flag. Any hint of a gas smell means you shut it off immediately and call a professional — don't try to diagnose that yourself.

If the furnace starts right up and runs clean, great. You've got peace of mind. If it struggles, trips, or doesn't come on at all, you've just bought yourself time to get it fixed before the rush.

Change That Filter

A dirty filter is the number one furnace killer I see, and it's the easiest thing in the world to fix. During heating season, plan on swapping your filter every 30 days if your system runs heavily, or at least every one to three months otherwise. If you've got pets, lean toward the shorter end of that range. A clogged filter starves your furnace of airflow, makes it work harder than it should, and shortens its life. A new filter costs a few dollars. A new heat exchanger does not.

Check Your Batteries — All of Them

Before the season starts, pop fresh batteries into your thermostat and, just as importantly, your carbon monoxide detectors. A gas furnace that's venting improperly can produce CO, and a detector with a dead battery won't save anyone. This takes about three minutes and it could save your life. Don't skip it.

Clear Your Vents

Walk through your house and make sure supply vents aren't blocked by furniture, rugs, or boxes. Blocked vents make your system work harder and can create uneven heating throughout the house. It's a simple thing, but I see it all the time.

When to Call for a Professional Tune-Up

Even if your furnace passes the home test with flying colors, a professional tune-up every year or two is money well spent. We clean burners, check heat exchangers for cracks, test ignition components, verify gas pressure, and look at things you simply can't see from the outside. Catching a cracked heat exchanger early, for example, can prevent a CO situation down the road. It's the kind of thing that pays for itself.
