Here in North Texas, we talk about the heat all summer long — but what makes August truly miserable isn't just the temperature. It's the moisture hanging in the air. And once you understand that, a lot of things start to make sense.

Why Humidity Fools Your Body

Your body cools itself through sweat. Sweat evaporates off your skin, and that evaporation pulls heat away from you. It's a remarkably effective system — as long as the air is willing to absorb that moisture. When indoor humidity climbs above 60%, the air is already so saturated that your sweat barely evaporates at all. Your body just stays hot. That's why a room at 75°F with high humidity can feel closer to 83 or 85°F. The thermostat isn't lying to you — your comfort just depends on more than temperature alone.

The Mistake Most Homeowners Make

When people feel that sticky, heavy heat, the natural reaction is to reach for the thermostat and push it lower. I get it. But if humidity is the real problem, dropping the temperature just runs up your electric bill without actually making you more comfortable. You're treating the wrong symptom.

There's another sneaky culprit I see constantly: the thermostat fan set to ON instead of AUTO. When you run the fan continuously, it keeps blowing air across your indoor coil even after the cooling cycle stops. That coil collects moisture while it's running — but when the fan keeps going, it blows that moisture right back into your living space instead of letting it drain away. Switching to AUTO is one of the easiest free fixes I know.

And while I'm at it — bigger AC is not always better. An oversized system cools your house so fast that it shuts off before it's had time to pull meaningful moisture out of the air. Short run cycles mean you stay cool but stay sticky. Proper sizing matters, and it's something we take seriously on every installation we do.

What You're Actually Aiming For

A comfortable, healthy home in Johnson and Tarrant counties should sit somewhere between 40% and 55% relative humidity. Below 40% and you're drying out your sinuses and shocking yourself on every doorknob. Above 55–60% and you're setting the stage for dust mites, mold, and that general "blah" feeling that no amount of thermostat-fiddling will fix. Sustained high humidity also leads to musty smells, condensation on your vents, and eventually visible mold — none of which you want to deal with in August.
